Welcome to my 11th grade Biology class! Hope you all have had a relaxing summer and are now fully recharged and ready to tackle the school year with your best effort. The coursework is designed so that we can cover all the topics at a very manageable pace and have some fun along the way. Remember not to get overwhelmed by the material, take it in stride, work steadily and consistently and you will see the desired results. I will be your Biology "coach" for this year and help you master this class. Short bio:
I am originally from Estonia (a little country in north-eastern Europe). I've lived in R.I. little over six years. I really enjoy working with young students and I especially enjoy being outside and exploring around. My favorite activities are hiking in the woods with my dog and sailing (my dog is usually included too). Hopefully we will be going on a few hiking/field trips together this semester! I graduated from a high school in Estonia and received my B.A. in Biology and Education from the University of Rhode Island.
Course Description:
Biology is a laboratory science course that covers the study of living things. We will focus on the study of life by examining the five fundamental concepts of cellular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and physiology. We will learn scientific writing skills and also examine current biological issues. The foundation of the class is based upon the standards developed by the Rhode Island Board of Education. This course focuses on ACTIVE learning and thus consists of weekly laboratories as well as group presentations. I hope you will enjoy the labs and group work, it should be very exciting and fun! Student Learning Objectives:
• to gain a conceptual understanding of biological systems and processes
• to understand the role of biology in personal, local , and global issues
• to become competent in the use of biology lab/computer equipment
• to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills Course Grade:
Your course grade will be calculated out of a possible 100%. Your grades will come from a weekly quiz, group presentations, lab work, and chapter exams. Also, extra credit will be rewarded for great attitude and enthusiasm!
